3D Star Browser in Avalon (continued)

The experiments with Avalon and the Galaxy visualisation continue. Here's a screenshot of ~78000 objects loaded into Avalon . The gold stars are the ~5000 of the personal version of SSA while the ~73000 are the stars from the personal version of the SDSS (MySkyServer).

Waiting from Bob Mann (a great guy and the astronomer who gave me the directions on what I need to do with the White Dwarfs application and the 3D browser since I need to calculate the distances of the stars) to confirm the result before moving on to the huge datasets via Web Services.

The screenshot bellow was rendered by Avalon but, of course, there is no expectation for the animation to work (oh... and the stars are not spheres anymore but cubes 🙂

  1. Didn’t dig into avalon yet, but why don’t you use sprites? Hope there are sprites in avalon.. 🙂 Perfect for stars in a galaxy.. 🙂 You could also use Managed DirectX but I agree discovering Avalon should be a lot more fun 🙂 RGabo
  2. Sprites is a solution i am considering now given the many number of stars I want to plot (>100,000) but I also want to allow the user to fly around the space freely. I thought I’d play with a proper 3D model first and then look at optimisations. Good suggestion though. Thanks!
