Environmental Sciences

In my new role in Microsoft's Technical Computing group I get to work with scientists from all disciplines, which is very cool. I am particularly looking forward, though, to working with environmental scientists.

Yesterday, Roger Barga, fellow Technical Computing Architect, and I visited the University of Washington to talk with Keith Grochow. I was very impressed with the stuff he has been doing and his ideas. I am really looking forward to more interactions.

It's great to see the concept of mashups (data and functionality) being used even in client-side rich applications. The one that Keith showed us (screenshot below) was using data from NASA's World Wind. The network of sensors is part of the NEPTUNE project. I very much hope to have the opportunity to do something in this space and to work with these folks 😉
